Donizetti (1797-1848) Gaetano DONIZETTI When Donizetti was asked which of his best works he wrote, he replied: “What do you want to say? A father always loves lame children more and I There are too many lame children. ”I (Sir Charles Harley, founder of the Manchester Symphony Orchestra) from time to time met a brilliant man from 1840 to 1841, and he was Donizetti. He was such a distinguished, amiable, well-dressed gentleman, as elegant as his music. He is still young, but very productive and has produced more than forty operas. I remember talking to him about Rossini, and asked if Rossini really wrote a “barber” within two weeks. “Oh, I believe it,” he said. “He's been so lazy!” I admit that I looked at the young man with respect and curiosity. He thought spending an entire two weeks writing an opera was a waste time.
