华南热带作物科学研究院热带经济植物园创建于1958年8月间。它位于我国广东省海南岛西北部儋县以西十公里处的宝岛新村,该处为北纬19°32地,东经109°,年平均温度为23℃,多年绝对最低温度在10℃以上(1959年春及1975年12月,1976年1月凌晨出现短暂的绝对最低温度为1℃,並出现轻霜),年降雨量1400至1900毫米,空气湿度80％左右。一年之中干湿季分明,每年11—4月为旱季,5—10月为雨季。植被为热带常绿季雨林。土壤为花岗岩发育的砖红壤性土壤,呈微酸性,团粒结构好。
