A naturally occurring fungus and its toxins under research at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Center for Agricultural Research, ARS, will soon likely compete with chemical herbicides. The toxin comes from Alternaria cassiae, a fungistat that is sprayed in soybeans to kill sickle grass without damaging the soybean plants. Doug Boyette of the US Department of Agriculture’s Southern Weed Science Laboratory (Stoneville, MA) splashed Alternaria in a soybean field and killed 98% of the sickle grass in the field. According to a rough ARS estimate, this grass causes at least 4 million USD damage to soybean crops each year.
