Since ancient times, philosophers have shown their close ties with artists and the arts. In ancient Greece, Plato’s writings reflect his ambivalence toward artists and their social roles. He is said to be a frequent visitor to the painter and sculptor’s studio and a knowledgeable scholar in literary arts such as poetry. He uses the discourse recorded in their original Greek language, in addition to his appreciation of the literary flavor, we can meditate on its philosophical connotation. In “Laws,” he claimed that a person who can not dance can not be considered a well-educated person. However, he found that the lack of knowledge of artists is due to their dependence on emotion rather than their reason.
