Cajal interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) are gastrointestinal motility pacemaker cells that are involved in the conduction of paced currents and mediate neural signals between enteric and smooth muscle cells. Studies have shown that the small intestine and colon with a reduced or absent number of ICCs lose their normal peristalsis. Confirmed ICC pathological changes associated with gastrointestinal motility disorders. Inflammation can cause gastrointestinal motility disorders, ICC in its pathophysiology began to receive attention. A detailed explanation of the role of ICC in disease states requires further research in physiology and pharmacology.
