Introduction Sardinops melanosticta (Temminck-Schlegel), a proposed farmed sardine in the Far East, was once one of the most important fish species in Japan’s coastal fisheries and captured 1,566,000 tons in 1936. However, catch has since started to decline, to 155,000 tons in 1945 (Kurita and Tanaka, 1956). After the war, a national resource survey on national cooperation was launched to investigate the decline in fishing and to obtain scientific information on resource management and the prediction of fishing (Nakai et al., 1955). The survey covered three main areas: catches and fishing
