To explore the relationship between the content of trace elements of zinc, copper, iron, calcium and magnesium and schizophrenia. Methods The content of zinc, copper, iron, calcium and magnesium in the hair of 75 schizophrenic patients (type Ⅰ, n = 34) and 60 healthy controls were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Results (1) The levels of zinc and zinc in the hair of schizophrenic patients were lower than those of normal controls (P <0.01), while the contents of copper, iron and calcium increased (P <0.01) Ⅱ type comparison, no difference between the above elements (P> 0.05). (2) The content of zinc and magnesium in the hair of schizophrenia patients was higher than that of the women (P <0.01). The content of calcium and magnesium in the hair of the normal controls was higher than that of the female (P <0.01). (3) After 40 days of antipsychotic treatment, the content of zinc in the hair of the patients increased (P <0.01) and the contents of copper and calcium decreased (P <0.01). Conclusion There are trace elements in the hair of type Ⅰ and type Ⅱ schizophrenia patients.
