阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
People say teenagers are no good. They make too much noise in shopping malls; they drive recklessly up and down America’s main streets; they carry chips on their shoulders as big as the Sears Tower. And at least some of the time those things are true. But we shouldn’t forget that there are hard moments in the life of a teenager too.
I watched such a moment not long ago at a woman’s funeral. I didn’t expect the event to affect me. Through much of the ceremony, in fact, I remained unmoved.
Then her teenage grandson stepped forward. With his very first deep breath, every heart in that church was achingly reminded of something we had all forgotten. Softly he began, “I want to share a few values that Nana taught me. She never failed to see light in any situation. When our family dog would literally attack her, what would Nana say? ‘Oh, what beautiful markings that dog has.’ That was Nana.”
“She was a strong woman who often lived in the shadow of my grandpa, who was a successful businessman in the city. But she was the one behind the scenes who provided the strength and support for Grandpa’s career,” he said, with a voice trembling. “That was Nana’s way.”
Through a muffled sob, he continued. “Whenever she did anything worth recognition, you’d have to hear about it from a different source, because she was never one to brag.”
Finally, in a voice breaking free of sorrow, he looked up and said, “Nana taught me courage. She put up an incredible fight to the end, when she died peacefully, which is how she lived her life. That was Nana’s way, and I hope I can carry on in the same manner.”
There are no hearts as sensitive as those of teenagers, because everything is happening to them for the first time. The trouble with teenagers is that they haven’t learned to be controlled.
When that boy rose to speak about the woman who surely had been his truest ally and dearest friend, his honest voice dragged each of us out into the open where we could no longer hide in the calm ritual. He exposed us to the truth about this very real woman who believed in a boy who probably tried the patience of many adults. He reminded us that his grandmother was more than another dot on the chart of life and death.
All over again we felt those powerful losses crisscrossing our own hearts, and we knew that when you say good-bye to a beloved grandparent, you say good-bye to something happy, something young in yourself. And that something never really returns, and the pain never really goes away.
56. According to the first paragraph,_______.
A. young people should keep quiet before the public
B. people don’t think highly of the teenagers
C. people shouldn’t forget the young people
D. young people are living a hard life
57. From the boy’s speech, we know his grandmother_______.
A. was a weak woman living in the shadow of his grandpa
B. liked dogs very much even if they often attacked her
C. could see everything around her though she was old
D. had great influence over the boy when she was alive
58. We can infer from the passage that the boy_______.
A. was filled with sadness and gave up finishing his talk
B. was always very good at expressing himself
C. practiced a lot in order to give a moving speech
D. had great difficulty in accepting the loss of Nana
59. The writer wanted to tell the readers______.
A. the young people were too weak to face the fact
B. the young people had to learn to control themselves
C. the adults could learn something valuable from the young

Cheating: the income-tax deadline approaches and some taxpayers’ thoughts turn to it. Test time approaches and some students turn to it.
“You want something you can’t get by behaving within the rules, and when you want it badly enough, you’ll do it regardless of any guilt or deep regret, and you’re willing to run the risk of being caught.” That’s how Ladd Wheeler, psychology professor at the University of Rochester in New York, defines cheating.
Many experts believe cheating is on the rise. “We are suffering a moral breakdown.”Pinkard says: “We’re seeing more of the kind of person who regards the world as a series of things to be dealt with. Whether to cheat depends on whether it’s in the person’s interest.” He does, however, see less cheating among the youngest students.
Richard Dienstbier, psychology professor at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, believe that society’s attitudes account for much of the upsurge(高涨) in cheating.
“Twenty years ago if a person cheated in college, society said: ”That is extremely serious, you will be dropped for a semester(学期) if not kicked out permanently,” he says.
“Nowadays, at the University of Nebraska, for example, it is the stated policy of the College of Arts and Science that if a student cheats on an exam, the subject must receive an “F” on what he cheated on. That’s nothing. If you’re going to flunk anyway, why not cheat?”
“Cheating is most likely in the situation where the interests are high and the chances of getting caught are low,” says social psychologist Lynn Kahle of the University of Oregon in Eugene.
60. The text centers on_______.

62. It could be inferred from the text that_____.
A. cheating is widespread because society is too tolerant
B. cheating is the result of intense pressure
C. cheating is cheating, whether on a test or on any other occasions
D. cheating comes together with civilization
63. The underlined word “flunk” in Paragraph 6 probably means_______.
A. fear B. be pleased
C. succeed D. fail

Here are two letters from our readers expressing their concern about school assessment:
(1)
Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades. Fortunately, most educators realize that students have different interests and abilities. However, grade-based assessment is still very common. Grades often holds back creativity. Competing for better grades causes many students to turn down opportunities to go in for music, drama and sports. Grades are also an unfair measure of a student’s ability. I do not demand, as some extremists do, that grades should no longer be recorded. However, I do believe that less importance should be placed on grades. I hope that someday grades will become optional at Village High School.
Magdalena Smith, President
Drama Club
(2)
Let’s face the facts about grades. Grades perform three basic functions. First, grades get students to work at their highest level of competence. Second, they act as an encouragement for hardworking students and as a warning to those who are not. Finally, grades are an effective standard by which to measure students’ achievement. Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university.
I’ve spoken with a number of students who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired mainly because of their grades. My grades helped me get a part-time job and will help me into university next year. I think grades are extremely important at Village High School.
Simon Harper, Member,
Science Club
64. Simon Harper writes from the viewpoint of someone who_______.
A. insists grades should become optional in the near future
B. believe in the advantages of assessment based on grades
C. is concerned about improving students’ creativity
D. supports using students’ interests to measure their abilities
65. Magdalena Smith thinks it is important for_______.
A. educators to assess the students by grades
B. educators to pay more attention to grades
C. students to compete for better grades
D. students to take part in music, drama, and sports
66. According to the letters, which of the following is TRUE about Village High School?
A. Grades are effective in every way
B. Grades hold back students’ creativity
C. Grades bring about unnecessary competition
D. Grades are still in use at present
67. What are the two letters mainly about?
A. The role that grades should play in assessing students
B. The importance of art and music in students’ life
C. The need to have a standard measure for students’ success
D. The reasons why grades shouldn’t be used to assess students
D
Successful people always have a dream. They dream big dreams and then show great courage to do things that others say cannot be done.
Your dreams come from the foundation of success. Many people have long forgotten the dreams they used to have when they were kids. As they grow older, they are simply too caught up with their work activities that they fail to discover what they really want to pursue in life.
To get you back on track to pursue your dreams, follow these steps:
Learn to dream again: We are born to dream. But we hear of teachers calling in school: “Stop dreaming and paying attention in class!” Parents, too, have shouted, “Stop dreaming and get on with your homework!” In the end, many do get “realistic” and give up their dreams in time.
Dream big dreams: Never set mental boundaries on what you are able to achieve. Dreams are free anyway so as long as you are dreaming, you might as well dream big. Many people cannot realize their dreams and achieve greater success because they limit their own beliefs.
Flee from dream killers: Dream killers are destructive to your success. Your friends, colleagues and even loved one can be one of your dream killers. There are people who will try to change, confuse or persuade you to build the life they want, not the life that you want.
Stop listening to the people who tell you why you will not achieve your dreams. You just need to believe you can do whatever it is you want to do.
You should stop giving reasons why you cannot achieve your dreams. Many so-called reasons are merely excuses.
Take action immediately: Once you have big and clear dreams, take immediately action to work toward making them come true.
Weeks later, the passion will grow cold and months later, that passion may be gone forever. Think about this: Five birds are resting on the fence and minutes after, three birds decide to fly off to search for food. How many birds are left on the fence?
Two? Wrong! There should still be five birds on the fence because deciding to fly off is not the same as the actual act of flying off.
68. Why have many people forgotten their dreams they had when they were young?
A. Because they work too hard
B. Because they have no time to dream again
C. Because they are stuck in the work
D. Because they have to work hard to make a living
69. All the following are the dream killers except_______.
A. friends and parents
B. time and age
C. teachers and oneself
D. someone you love
70. What does the bird example mean in the passage?
A. It’s no use deciding without action
B. Deciding is less useful than taking action
C. Deciding is different from taking action
D. It’s easier to decide than take action
71. The best title of this passage probably is______.
A. Why dream again?
B. How to dream again
C. Take action immediately!
D. Dare to dream again!

English name change for 2008 Olympic mascots
Oct.16, 2006—the 2008 Olympic Game mascots(吉祥物) have been renamed from the “Friendlies” to “Fuwa” due to the concern that the original name may have caused confusion, Beijing Star Daily reports.
The Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games(BOCOG) has officially announced the change of name on its website, but Olympic ads and products using the mascots will continue to use the original name in the short term.
The suitability of the mascots’ name has been the subject of heated debate since the Friendlies were unveiled to the public.
Dr Li from Lanzhou University in Gansu Province was the first critic to criticize the name. He thinks “friendlies” is too ambiguous(含糊的) a title for the mascots, as it refers to friendly people as well as the friendship games. He also objected to the title on the grounds that it is too similar to words and phrases with negative meanings, like “friendless” and “friendlies”.
Dr Li proposed three alternative(可替代的) names to BOCOG, including Forworld, Forward and Forwords. He said Forworld stands for the slogan “One World, One Dream” and it is true to the Olympic slogan “Faster, Higher, Braver”. Foreign people also approved of Forwards because they liked its meaning and the way it is pronounced in Chinese, fuwazi.
The committee rejected all of these suggestions, deciding instead to rename the mascots “Fuwa”. Standing for happiness, prosperity(繁荣), health, good luck and enthusiasm, the new name symbolizes the Chinese people’s wishes for the people of the world.
72. Why have the 2008 Olympic Game mascots been renamed from the “Friendlies” to “Fuwa”?
A. To avoid confusion with the negative meanings.
B. To find out the attitudes towards the 2008 Olympic Game mascots.
C. To find out the real meaning of the 2008 Olympic Game mascots.
D. To predict what mascots people will like in the future
73. The underlined phrase “unveiled” in Paragraph 3 may probably mean_______.
A. discovered B. shown for the first time
C. celebratedD. hidden
74. What is the biggest concern with the change of English name for 2008 Olympic mascots?
A. The way it is pronounced in English.
B. The way it is pronounced in Chinese.
C. The meaning of the mascots’ name.
D. The suitability of the mascots’ name.
75. The main purpose of the passage is to
.
A. focus on the role of the mascots’ name
B. show that Chinese people are interested in renaming the mascots
C. inform the people of the English name change for 2008 Olympic mascots
D. give a report of the national fashion of the 2008 Olympic Games

65. Magdalena Smith thinks it is important for_______.
A. educators to assess the students by grades
B. educators to pay more attention to grades
C. students to compete for better grades
D. students to take part in music, drama, and sports
66. According to the letters, which of the following is TRUE about Village High School?
A. Grades are effective in every way
B. Grades hold back students’ creativity
C. Grades bring about unnecessary competition
D. Grades are still in use at present
67. What are the two letters mainly about?
A. The role that grades should play in assessing students
B. The importance of art and music in students’ life
C. The need to have a standard measure for students’ success
D. The reasons why grades shouldn’t be used to assess students

A. The way it is pronounced in English.
B. The way it is pronounced in Chinese.
