Over the past decade, fundamental changes have taken place in maritime data collection systems due to the significant improvements in the technology used on seismic ships. In the late seventies, the pace of progress was particularly rapid and more could be expected in the next ten years. One of the most significant developments of the 1970s was the use of a computer system on board that provided highly advanced technology that would have taken away much of the work that previous seismic teams had to do. On-board small computer systems that automatically control all seismic operations are also commonplace. These innovative devices allow users to select the survey coordinates and basic acquisition parameters, and then guide the seismic vessel to navigate automatically to the seismic line of construction, begin detonating the earthquake source, and collect and record data.
