There was a newer aircraft, the Lear Fan Turboprop, entirely made of graphite, with a fuselage that comfortably carried eight passengers from New York to Chicago at 400 miles per hour. The late aircraft designer William Lear had thought about it two decades ago, but at that time it was not possible to produce graphite because of its high price. At the moment, the price of graphite has dropped to $ 50 a pound, economically speaking, making such a plane is ready. A pilot prototype manufactured by Reynolds Fan, Reno, Nevada, will be produced in October 1980 and is scheduled to be mass-produced by the end of this year. United Carbide Company plans to provide Lear Corporation Solier carbon fiber - a kind of impregnated epoxy cloth similar to the graphite material
