The lanthanum-copper binary system was re-investigated by DTA, X-ray diffraction and metallographic analysis. In this system, four intermediate metal compounds have now been found. Namely: LaCu, LaCu_2, LaCu_5 and LaCu_6, and their crystal structures have been determined. Two of them, LaCu_2 and LaCu_6, respectively melt at 830 ° C and 950 ° C, respectively; the other two, LaCu and LaCu_5, form perovskites at 525 ° C and 805 ° C, respectively. The eutectic point occurs at about 9.0 atomic% La (865 ° C), 24.5 atomic% La (745 ° C), and 71.5 atomic% La (475 ° C). No appreciable solid solubility of La in Cu or Cu in La is observed.
