Objective To understand the general public’s awareness of rabies control in Beijing, and to accumulate baseline data for conducting relevant investigations and prevention work in the future. Methods In November 2004, a cross-sectional survey was conducted on 161 households of all dog owners in the community and 148 non-dog households in the same floor of the same building. Questionnaire interviews were conducted on the informed persons of each household. As a result, the rate of dogs in community households was 5.2%, and the residents’ awareness of rabies prevention knowledge was 81.9%-96.8%. 87.1% of the surveyed dog owners were raised with dog certificates; 12.9% were without evidence of raising dogs. The rabies vaccination rate of domestic dogs was 94.2%, of which the vaccination rate was 100% for dogs and 55% for dogs without a dog. The bite rate of dogs surveyed by dogs was 12.2%, including 16.1% for dog owners and 8.1% for non-dog owners. There was a significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion The residents of Tianqiao Community in Beijing have a higher level of knowledge of rabies prevention and control, and the rate of rabies vaccination for domestic dogs in the community is also high, which is of great significance for the prevention and control of rabies.
