This article is a speech delivered by Professor Jacques Derrida at Peking University on September 4, 2001. The speech was abridged because of the time, this is the full text of the manuscript. Like Derrida’s philosophical thinking on the issues of “right,” “fairness,” “death,” “friendship,” and “hospitality” in the past decade, this article deconstructs the concept of “forgiveness.” His theoretical analysis of deconstruction shows that “forgiveness” is only conceivable when “unforgivable” exists. In the judiciary, timeliness also sets the crime of “being free from time constraints.” Philosophy, on the other hand, describes an open and fragile world. “Forgiveness” can find its place in this world, but it knows that nothing has actually been erased. “Forgiveness” in the final analysis is to do “impossible.”
