After more than a year of deliberation, most members of an international committee proposed a new nomenclature for the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). The proposed new name is Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), replacing the three existing names. The three names are: (1) “Lymphadenopathy-associated virus (LAV)” named by Luc Montagnier of the Institut Pasteur in Paris; 2 “Human-derived T Lymphovirus 3 (HTLV-III) ”; ③“ AIDS-Related Retrovirus (ARV) ”by Jay Levy and colleagues at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine.
