Wernicke’s encephalopathy was first proposed by Wernicke in 1881. It refers to the central nervous system metabolic diseases caused by the deficiency of vitamin B_1 (thiamine). The patients are critically ill. If not diagnosed and treated promptly, the case fatality rate can reach over 50% . Wernicke’s encephalopathy occurs as a result of prolonged fasting in patients with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP), parenteral nutrition, and failure to supplement vitamin B_1 in enteral nutrition. In our department, 11 cases of patients with Wernicke encephalopathy were treated by SAP. After careful treatment and nursing, the results were satisfactory.
