Increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and lack of sex hormones are closely related. We measured blood levels of lipids and lipoproteins before and after menopause in 660 healthy women (14-75 years of age). Total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), TC / HDL-C and LDL-C / HDL- C ratio increased significantly with age. The rates of TG, TC, LDL-C, VLDL-C, TC / HDL-C and LDL-C / HDL-C in postmenopausal women were significantly higher than those in premenopausal women (P <0.001 or 0.005) High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) no significant change. These changes can partly explain the increased incidence of CHD in postmenopausal women.
