There are two forms of guanylate cyclase (GC): the binding type located in the cell membrane and the free type distributed in the cytoplasm. There are many reports that atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) can stimulate GC activity and increase cGMP. Recently, Chinkers et al. Demonstrated that the receptor for ANP is the bound GC. They extracted and cloned the complete cDNA of the rat GC, which contains 1057 amino acid coding regions, of which 441 amino acids from the N-terminus are located outside the cell membrane and 567 amino acids are located within the cell membrane.
