From 1980 to May 1984, 505 residents of San Francisco in the United States were diagnosed with AIDS, of whom 99% were gay or bisexual men and only 2 were women, whites accounted for 92%, blacks and Spaniards each 4%. Age 21 to 65 years old when diagnosed, with an average of 35 years old. By the end of 1985, 420 (83%) patients had died, 74 (15%) were still alive and 11 (2%) were lost. The average patient survival time is estimated to be 11 months. The 1-year and 3-year survival rates were 44% and 11% respectively.
