Adam Zagajewski (1945-) is a poet, novelist and essayist in Poland that has world influence today. Born in Lviv, Lithuania, almost immediately after his birth, he came to Poland. He also taught at the University of Houston. His major publications include The Gazette (1972), The Butcher Shop (1975), The Letter: Praise of Many (1982), Lviv to Go (1985), The Canvas (1990), The Glowing Land (1994) and Desire (1999), novels such as The Warm and Cold (1975) and Thin Lines (1978) and The Second Wind (1978), Solidarity and Loneliness (1986) , “Twins” (1991), “The Beauty of Others” (1998) and other essays. Has won numerous international literature awards, works have been translated into English, French, German and other languages. As the representative poet of Polish New Wave Poetry, Zagayevsky argues that poetry should reflect the truth of life as much as possible and should abandon the false elements in language. There should be a sense of doubt and criticism. His poetry is concise, bright, natural and simple, and has a power of thought. When World Literature first introduced his poetry, he got a lot of readers ’and friends’ favorites. The following poems are translated from the English version of Mysticism for Beginners (American Farah, Strauss and Gilrookes Press, 1997).
