Today’s British Museum has 8 million collections, as many as the abundance of categories enough to string together the entire history of the world. And its predecessor, turned out to be a cupboard - Sir Hans Sloan’s private cupboard. Sir Hans Sloan, who was born in Ireland in 1660, is a full-time doctor. Sloan’s collector career began at the age of 27 - when he traveled to Jamaica as a visiting doctor for the new Governor of the United Kingdom Duke Albert Abbey, where he traveled extensively searching for records of various flora and fauna, especially as much as possible Plant specimens for portability. The 800 plant species and other living specimens collected during this trip are his first possessions
