Direct-reading dosimeters (DRDs) are often blamed on users for their poor precision and accuracy, often resulting in false readings. The study examined these controversial issues and discussed the factors that limit the performance of such instruments and their inevitable impact on personal surveillance. This article describes the measures that must be followed to eliminate or minimize the factors that affect measurement data. The data presented in the article supports the notion that a direct reading dosimeter, if used correctly, is a precise and accurate instrument. For some applications, the following features of this instrument, such as small size, ruggedness, harsh environment resistance, hermeticity and self-readability, are superior to Transfer Standards.
