This article explores the international research conducted nominally and practically by the social science community. International research differs from most social science research, with the latter being conducted within one country and scholars completing projects independently or jointly. A survey of key issue quality regulators found that there are a variety of international research activities in the UK that span across disciplines and have extensive collaborative links with academics around the world. There have emerged research characteristics that straddle national and regional boundaries, as well as insightful comparisons of the quality of international research in social sciences. This phenomenon has also led to a rethinking of the common view that the United States is a leader in social science research. In addition, it shows that the international social sciences are, of course, limited but it is possible to carry out large-scale projects.
