Antimicrobial peptides are a class of polypeptides produced by the body’s defense system. More and more studies have shown that antimicrobial peptides not only directly inhibit and kill pathogenic microorganisms, but also has a variety of immunomodulatory activity, play an important role in the host’s natural and adaptive immunity, which has broad application prospects. Their level of expression is closely linked to many human diseases. This review summarizes the structural characteristics, expression and biological activity of two major classes of human antimicrobial peptides, defensins and cathelicidin, and their relationship to disease.
