The United States Army has embarked on the development of the next generation of MBTs. The Army believes the M1 tank will not be able to move forward with emerging technologies. A senior Army official estimates that the development cost for raising the M1A2 tank to the M1A3 tank standard amounts to about $ 1.2 billion.
