Surrey University UK has developed a measure of vibration of moving objects instrument. This type of instrument works on the same principle as the known microwave Doppler radar devices that measure aircraft and ship speed. Because of the use of lasers that operate at wavelengths several orders of magnitude smaller than microwave devices, this approach can be used for the purposes described. The main reason is that the laser beam can focus on a small area compared to microwaves. Figure 1 is a photograph of the test device. Figure 2 is a schematic view. The He-Ne laser beam is split into a reference beam and a target beam by a beamsplitter like the Michelson interferometer.
