According to data released by the World Health Organization on December 1, as of the end of 2013, there were about 35 million people living with HIV globally, of whom 3.2 million were children; in 2013, about 1.5 million people died of AIDS worldwide. Most infected people live in low-income countries and regions. According to WHO statistics, in 2013 there were about 2.1 million new HIV infections globally, of which over 240,000 were children. AIDS is still an important infectious disease that causes death. In low- and middle-income countries and regions, the means of preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV is still very limited. In fact, mother-to-child transmission of HIV can be avoided by antiretroviral treatment. In 2013, some 970,000 HIV-infected women in the world were delivered during pregnancy, of whom 70% received this treatment.
