Drug resistance in Staphylococcus epidermidis infections is a serious problem with many clinical isolates resistant to as many as 8 different antibiotics. Farnesol is an essential component of many plants and was found to be active against Staphylococcus epidermidis. Through a control strain, it was found that farnesol did little to biofilm bacteria, but a substantial decrease in biofilm biomass was detected, suggesting that farnesol may induce biofilm shedding.
