西湖,旧称武林水、金牛湖、明圣湖、钱塘湖。因其位于杭州市西,故唐代开始称“西湖”。自宋代文豪苏轼写下“欲把西湖比西子,淡妆浓抹总相宜”的诗句后,西湖又被叫做西子湖。据地质学家考证,早在远古时代,西湖是与钱塘江相通的海湾,后因泥沙淤塞,大海被逐步隔断,再经过山泉活水的冲洗和历代人工的疏浚整理,最后形成一个泻湖。人们不仅被西湖美丽的风光所倾倒,而且被湖中的“三怪”现象所吸引。 West Lake, formerly known as Wulin water, Jinniu Lake, Ming St. Lake, Qiantang Lake.
