西湖,旧称武林水、金牛湖、明圣湖、钱塘湖。因其位于杭州市西,故唐代开始称“西湖”。自宋代文豪苏轼写下“欲把西湖比西子,淡妆浓抹总相宜”的诗句后,西湖又被叫做西子湖。据地质学家考证,早在远古时代,西湖是与钱塘江相通的海湾,后因泥沙淤塞,大海被逐步隔断,再经过山泉活水的冲洗和历代人工的疏浚整理,最后形成一个泻湖。人们不仅被西湖美丽的风光所倾倒,而且被湖中的“三怪”现象所吸引。
West Lake, formerly known as Wulin water, Jinniu Lake, Ming St. Lake, Qiantang Lake. Because of its location in Hangzhou West, so the Tang Dynasty began to call “West Lake ”. Since the Song Dynasty writer Su Shi wrote “want to West Lake than West, light makeup thick wipes ” poem, the West Lake has also been called West Lake.
