A team of scientists from the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), the Naval Coastal Systems Center (NCSC) and the Florida State University (FSU) identified and eroded a major source of noise that affects the performance of superconducting devices. The team found that the noise was caused by temperature fluctuations when working with SQUIDs and these fluctuations would create glitches in the thermal elements of any SQUID instrument. SQUID is mainly composed of three kinds of superconducting materials: niobium, niobium / titanium and lead. Work, the probe’s operating temperature remains at 4.2K. SQUID device work is based on the basic principle of superconductivity: magnetic flux in the superconducting ring (field strength × area)
