和约翰·阿什伯利不同,希尼的朗诵确实掷地有声,低沉而深厚,每一行诗句是略有停顿,他会透过眼镜短暂地注视听众,如同一种无声的探询,迅即,下一行诗句便流淌而出。他的英语稍带爱尔兰口音,诗句吟诵得不疾不徐……。那夜,当你随着晚钟,踏入高耸着白色尖塔的哈佛纪念教堂大堂时,你会发觉那个场面肃穆,而大厅两侧高墙上密集凹显的文字则渲染着庄严。我随着表情拘谨的人们依次进入座位,并和旁人一样地试着用高雅的神态微笑致意。这是一场颇为隆重的、被称为“诗和音乐之夜”的庆祝活动,是哈佛大学美术馆建立一百周年的系列庆典之一。
