This paper reports on the four components of flavonoids and sterols isolated from the traditional Chinese medicine, Hong Zelan (the whole plant of the deciduous plant Malan Strobilan Shes japonicus I). One of them was identified by chemical and spectral analysis as a new flavonoid glycoside (II) and named as strobilanthin, namely 5,7-dimethoxy-4’-hydroxyflavone-4’-0- celeryose. For the first time, another family is directly obtained from the natural world. The flavonoid compound (I) is the first one of the flavonoids (5,7-dimethoxy-4’-hydroxyflavone); the other two are the first from the genus Phalaenopsis. In the separation, stigmasterol (III) and soybean meal-8 (14)-en-3-ol (IV) were respectively separated.
