Multiple sclerosis (MS) has long been considered as Th1 cell-mediated autoimmune disease. In recent years, helper T cell subsets distinct from Th1 cells and Th2 cells have been found to express Th17 cells characterized by interleukin-17. More and more evidences show that Th17 cells are involved in the pathological process of autoimmune inflammation and play an important role in the occurrence and development of MS. However, the production, proliferation and secretion of Th17 are influenced by many cytokines, such as interleukin-4 and transforming growth factor-β. This review focuses on the immunological function of Th17 cells, the impact of factors and their correlation with the pathogenesis of MS.
