Researches on the essential mechanism of acu-puncture as a cure for coronary heart disease areof great clinical and theoretical significance.Previousreports have shown that nucleus of solitary tract(NST)plays an important role in the central controland regulation of cardiovascular activities.Bymaking extracellular recordings of NST unitdischarge with glass microelectrodes, this study in-vestigates how NST exerts a converging and integra-ting effect on the signals coming from AMI(acutemyocardial ischemia)and EA(electro-acupuncture)atacupoint Neignan(P 6).The results are as follows:1.Bilateral EA at‘Neiguan” has three effectson NST neuron spontaneous discharges,frequency-increasing,-decreasing,and first-increasing-then-decreasing,with frequency-decreasing dominating.2.Bilateral EA at“Neiguan”performs a two-directional regulatory function toward the NSTneuron discharge changes. The signals from EAand AMI are found in our experiments to convergeat the same NST neuron suggesting that EA mayaffect the cardiovascular reflex activities broughtabout by AMI in NST neurons.

The results are as follows: 1.Bilateral EA at’Neiguan “has three effects on NST neuron spontaneous discharges, frequency-increasing, -decreasing, and first-increasing-then-decreasing, with frequency-decreasing dominating.2.Bilateral EA at” Neiguan "performs a two-directional regulatory function toward the NST neuron changes changes. The signals from EA and AMI are found in our experiments to converge the same NST neuron suggesting that EA mayaffect the cardiovascular reflex activities broughtabout by AMI in NST neurons.
