Introduction The introduction of tungsten carbide rolls into hot rolling initially was designed to give mill operators access to the very high speeds achievable with the first generation of non-twisting mills. The rolling speed of 35 m / s (8500 fpm) requires a more wear-resistant roll material in order to avoid having to frequently change the pass and roll. This versatile material has demonstrated a number of advantages over the 15 or 20 years since it was first successfully rolled with tungsten carbide rolls.
