先民有言:“同能不如独诣。”又曰:“众会不如独赏。”独诣可求于已,独赏罕逢其人。予于画竹亦然。不趋时流,不干名誉,丛篁一枝,出之灵府,清风满林,惟许白练雀飞来相对也。[1]这是金农画竹的一段题记,道出其于绘事的态度和基本心境。此段话移以述张宗祥之书法亦甚贴切。张宗祥生于一八八二年,卒于一九六五年,成长在西学东渐之风日盛的年代,但其志于国学,成就卓著。“良师、良吏、良医是张宗祥一生事功的慨括。”[2]先生早岁为人师讲学于两浙师范学堂、清华学堂、浙江高等学堂等处,三十岁后历任清朝、民国和中华人民共和国文化、教育或地方政府官员,五十岁后始免费行医。在他的一生中,书画只是余事,书法也有著述传世,集中见于后人为其编汇的《张宗祥书法论从》(浙江美术出版社,
