Exhibition Period: October 19, 2014 to February 1, 2015 Venue: Lacma Pavilion, Los Angeles Samurai hierarchy has played an integral role in Japan’s history and culture since the 8th century. As the ruling class in society at that time, they were influenced by calligraphy and painting, tea ceremony and poetic art and abided by ethics such as loyalty, righteousness, courage and courtesy. To maintain the grace and decency of a warrior and to add glory to his family, descendants, clans, or emperor is the primary tenet of his life. Therefore, dignified and decent weapons and armor became the aesthetic expression of Japanese bushido. Experienced centuries of time and practice, they have made a pair of classic paradoxes of Japanese culture: mysterious low-key simplicity and almost show off the contrast of luxury. This comparison, also reflected in the Japanese armor art exhibition.
