Mechanization is seen as a panacea for the dismantling of the gold mining industry in South Africa, however, the development of equipment is relatively slow and can not meet the requirements of mechanization. In the early 1970s, trackless loaders and rigs began to be used in base metal mines and in 1976 they were extended to mines and diamond mines. Until 1983, some gold and platinum mines in South Africa used scrapers and rock drilling rigs. The reasons why delays have not been adopted are yet to be fully understood, but certainly there is a reason why many of South Africa’s gold mines are drilled deeper than any other mine in the world, making it almost impossible for many technological developments to draw lessons from real world experience.
