The GaAs preparation process has begun to move out of the laboratory into the commodity market. This is due to the need for other systems that are superior to silicon devices in their performance. By 1990, this vibrant market will have sales of $1.4 billion. The GaAs market in the 1980s will be controlled by various military development programs. In several defense systems, the demand for electronic circuits that are superior to silicon performance is urgent, and great efforts have been made in the application of GaAs in missile and satellite electronic systems. It is expected that the sales of GaAs in the military and government sectors will have substantial growth by the mid-1980s. The total annual growth rate of 70% will continue until the early 1990s, and then it will tend to grow at an average rate.
