To date, the United States has launched 44 manned spacecraft into space and has advertised it almost every time. However, under the space shuttle Discovery, scheduled to launch in late January 1985, NASA decided to take full security measures at the request of the Ministry of Defense. The U.S. Air Force Command convened a press conference for the incident, announcing a series of injunctions that required the press to work together so that space voyage, code-named “51-C Mission,” was completely “in the cloud.” Because “Discovery” will carry purely military equipment for purely military purposes. Brigadier General Abel Air Force spokesman told journalists that the reason for confidentiality is to avoid having “the other side” know anything about the launch of the space shuttle and the equipment it contains. Brigadier Abel also warned the press that “speculation” about the mission and the equipment it carries will be subject to legal scrutiny that undermines national security.
