2000 is the year of “big fortune” for the world shipping industry and shipbuilding industry. The average turnover of the oil tankers increased 138% over 1999, the revenue of the bulk transportation industry increased by 46.7%, and the freight rate of container shipping also rose by 26%. Volumes of new vessels continued the high order movement in 1999, the highest in more than 20 years. The cost of each ship increased from 2% to 24%. The average cost of newbuildings rose 12%. Different from the world shipping industry, the shipping industry in China is in contrast with the stock market at the end of the year. In particular, coastal and inland shipping is not only economically inefficient, but traffic safety is also worrying. Although the overall situation on the water side is better than usual in the past (except in 1999), according to statistics from relevant departments, there were still 585 water-traffic accidents in 2000 with an economic loss of 135.963 million yuan.
