刘师培的清学史研究以“学案”为中心,确立起“学行并重”的评价标准。刘氏论说清儒,重在言“失”。“统系”是刘师培治清学史的一个基本概念,它要求在尽可能广罗万家的基础上对清代学者及其成果进行分门别派的归类和概括。在其“统系”概念中,家法和师承居于纲领性地位。其“统系”内含两组彼此消长的子系:宋学与汉学、今文学与古文学。刘师培的学科观,重在以“学”划类。在他的意识中,“学科”只是对学术史进行研究的“体例”之一,并且分科的标准是“以学为主”。刘师培对清代学术作学科性研究,着力点在于“经学”和“文学”。将经学作为一门学科,是刘氏的特色。对清儒治学成果进行分类、分时与分地相结合的考察,是刘师培清学史研究的一大特点。他认为分类与分时相结合是中西学术界普遍使用的方法,他还将地域分野及其学术风格特征作为专门课题进行研究。

He believes that the combination of classification and time-sharing is a commonly used method by both Chinese and western academia. He also studies the characteristics of geographical division and academic style as a special subject.
