Time: 2008 Region: Europe and the United States Country: Lithuania Making a cross is a national tradition in Lithuania. It is not only the cross and the altar but also the sanctification of the cross and the rituals associated with it. The oak-carved cross is associated with the Catholic ritual and is also closely linked with the celebration of harvests and other ancient festivals. These activities form a culture of more than 400 years, rooted in pagan traditions prior to the birth of Christianity. However, once the cross is sanctified by the priest, it is given the indivisible divine meaning.
