With the large quantities of offshore oil drilling platforms (ships) put into operation, it is very important to conduct timely telephone, telex and data transmission communications between platforms and shore to platform. The International Maritime Satellite Communications system introduced in this paper, commonly referred to as the INMARSAT system, is suitable for global communications on offshore drilling platforms, transport vessels and remote mountainous terrains. The system provides on-shore and shore-to-ship telephone, telex and high-speed data transfer (56 kilobytes per second). It is accomplished by means of one of three satellites in 36,000 kilometers of geostationary orbits above the equator, with satellites kept in relatively fixed positions on the ground by dedicated control and command equipment. Each satellite has a fixed coverage area that together make up the three communications areas: the Pacific Ocean; the Indian Ocean; the Atlantic Ocean. Each region includes four basic components: the space segment (satellite); ship or platform station; shore station; network coordination station.
