This article is the result of a longitudinal study that explores the implications for distance-based English teaching by focusing on the different linguistic features embodied in real-time and non-real-time online discussions and student feedback. The research shows that colloquial features of real-time online discussion are more obvious, which can make up for some deficiencies of remote English learning spoken practice, exercise the habit of thinking in English, improve reading speed and ability to write; non-real-time online discussion helps To cultivate students’ ability to reflect, to deepen the understanding of teaching materials, to make the expression more accurate and rigorous, to improve the overall English proficiency, especially in writing, and to promote mutual aid among students.
