在美国精英排斥唐人街和华埠剧团的情态下,梅兰芳有意识地扩展自己的社会网络,遵循西方的规则,进入美国主流社会,获得访美演出的成功,进入了西方的文明秩序。这得益于齐如山的前期筹备,也得益于张彭春对现代导演制度的推动,更得益于华美协进社的留学生网络在中美戏剧交流中的联络。而华埠剧团仍然是东方贫困落后的代表,二者在同一区域代表了两种不同的文明等级。以梅兰芳剧团为代表的中国戏剧以实践形式展开了与西方文明的对话,不自觉地在追寻一种世界艺术体系的新秩序。
