在布鲁姆看来,“憎恨学派”将价值论置于文学自身之上,正是这些持文化研究观念的“憎恨学派”使文学在今天失去了原有的强力,是他们正在戕害着文学经典。在文化研究如火如荼的当今世界,坚持审美批评立场的布鲁姆的确给我们一种英雄主义的感觉。事实上,布鲁姆所谓的“憎恨学派”们进行的文化研究从根本上并不与他所坚持的审美批评相悖,双方的基本观念不同,指向不同,对待文学经典的态度也不同,因此,布鲁姆与“憎恨学派”如同站在不同擂台上的对手,无法做到真正的交锋。而文化研究与审美批评二者应该是互补的,至少对于文学研究而言是这样的。
