The marginal sea is the connecting belt between land and ocean. It is the main way for terrestrial materials to be transported to the open sea and plays an important role in the global carbon cycle. Tracing the source of sedimentary organic carbon in the marginal sea can provide a basis for the study of the distribution, degradation, migration and transformation of organic carbon. This article from the higher plant lipid compounds (such as long chain n-alkanes, n-alkanols, fatty acids, sterols, etc.), vascular plant lignin and soil organic branched chain and isoprenoid tetraether (BIT) In the aspect, the research progress of tracing the source of organic matter by sea and land sources based on chemical biomarkers is introduced. It is pointed out that multiple tracing methods and multi-element models, including indicators such as lignin and BIT, are good methods to indicate the sources of organic matter deposition in the marginal sea and can provide more accurate and reliable results than the single-index method.
