Introduction AN / TPS-59 is a modern tactical three-coordinate solid-state radar. As early as 1963, the U.S. Department of Defense ordered the Air Force to formulate a three-radar radar to serve the Armed Forces. In the next six years, disputes arose due to the different needs of the three armed forces, delayed the plan and even the U.S. Army and Air Force once canceled the project. In November 1969, the Department of Defense commissioned the Marine Corps to take charge of the project. In 1971, the U.S. Navy Electronics Systems Division respectively signed a 9-month pre-research contract with General Electric Company of the United States, American Radio Company and Spirenton Corporation. In June 1972, GE finally selected GE to undertake the design and manufacture of TPS-59 (hereinafter referred to as 59) radar engineering prototype. In mid-1976, General Electric delivered 59 to the Marine Corps for acceptance and test flights. After a long, rigorous test
