苯基乙酸已用于钍和铟的测定。鉴于钍和钪常常可用同一有机试剂在不同酸度的介质中沉淀,而达到分离和测定之目的,因此试用苯基乙酸作钪的沉淀剂。主要的结果是苯基乙酸能从pH4—6.5的介质中定量沉淀钪、而钍在pH2.2和pH2.8或以上定量沉淀。试剂用量是钪的35倍,卽能定量沉淀,卽使加到约90倍亦无害。钪量为0.4—19毫克(卽0.6—29毫克氧化钪)均能测定(大于19毫克未试验)。沉淀系苯基乙酸钪,其分子式经元素分析证实为Sc(C_6H_5CH_2COO)_3。沉淀的热分解曲线上,
Phenylacetic acid has been used for the determination of thorium and indium. Since thorium and scandium can often be precipitated with the same organic reagent in different acidity mediums for the purposes of separation and determination, phenylacetic acid is used as a precipitant for scandium. The main result is that phenylacetic acid can precipitate scandium quantitatively from a medium of pH 4-6.5, while thorium settles quantitatively at pH 2.2 and pH 2.8 or above.
