After five years of extensive testing and evaluation, a long-term control of insects in tobacco leaves has shifted from the research phase to large-scale commercial use. The first insect growth regulator approved for storage of tobacco leaves, KABAT, has been recently registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. According to Robert E. Lucas, manager of marketing at Palo Alto Saskatoon, Calif., The firm believes that it protects stored tobacco by preventing the formation of tobacco beetles and adult tobacco worms. Unlike traditional pesticides that kill larvae or adults, kabat controls the population of insects by eliminating the generation of offspring so that larvae that contact or absorb the active ingredient do not complete their life cycle. After adjusting the moisture content of the tobacco leaves, the chemicals are sprayed onto the tobacco leaves before being placed in the storage container. Apply 10PPM
